Google PageRank on a Yo-Yo Diet
Today I noticed that Google is still apparently working with their PageRank algorithm. I’m still not entirely sure what they’ve done or what the definition of PageRank is anymore, but this site went from a PR0 to PR2 in about 24 hours.
I was under the impression that the PageRank was a measure of how many incoming links a site had combined with the relevancy of incoming links divided by the number of outgoing links from a site (something like: Incoming*(relevancy * some fraction) / outgoing links).
Other bloggers have reported that their PR has bounced back from the initial plunge and are quite happy about it, even though they were at first giving up on PageRank all together. While some bloggers are now just joking about PageRank, I still feel that it’s just a quick tool to see how active and linked a site really is or isn’t.
Although at this point I don’t think that Google’s PageRank means much, I can see why people are worried about it’s yo-yo diet as of late. I hope for their sake that they are not losing much sleep over this and wish them luck with finding sponsors who pay them for performance rather than PageRank.
